'Tis the season for festive cheer as Dundee and surrounding areas embrace the spirit of Christmas!
With lots of events on the horizon, we wanted to share with you some local events that you can enjoy completely free of charge. From crafting Christmas cards to exploring the magic of natural decorations, immersing in the world of Christmas films, and browsing festive markets, there’s something for everyone.
Arbroath Christmas Lights Switch On
Friday 24th November, 14:00 - 20:00
Join in the fun at Kirk Square as the Christmas Lights of Arbroath are officially switched on for 2023. There will be a crafters market, music from Radio North Angus, local performers including a pipe band, dancing and singing. Not to forget, a special appearance from Santa on his sleigh! You can also bring your letters along on the night to give to Santa or one of his many helpers. Remember to add your contact details so Santa can reply.
Christmas Card Workshop
Tuesday 28th November, from 17:15 onwards
Enjoy an evening of festive paper crafts inspired by artwork in the University of Dundee Museum Collections. Explore the Artists' Book Collection, draw inspiration from original Christmas card designs, and create your own cards using a variety of materials. Taking place in the Finlay Room at DJCAD Library, this free event welcomes everyone to experience the joy of holiday crafting.
Christmas On Film: A Talk by Dr Tom Christie
Friday 1st December, 14:30
Step into the world of Christmas movies at Dundee’s Central Library. Dr Tom Christie has been writing about the themes and history of Christmas cinema for over ten years. What is it about this timeless genre that has remained popular for generations? Join in to hear Tom talk about how the Christmas film has been developed over the decades and look at Christmas films made here in Scotland, exploring why the country has become a favourite of filmmakers in recent years.
Children’s Crafts at Blackness Library
Saturday 2nd December, 9.30am
For young school age children, these workshops are led by the wonderful Lisa Earl of ‘Create … Kids Create Crafts’. One session is already fully booked and the other has limited space available so book your space quickly! All children are required to be accompanied by a parent or carer who must stay with them throughout the session.
Animal decoration making
Saturday 2nd December, 11:00 – 13:00
Visit some of the Arctic and Antarctic animals found in the D'Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum. Discover Penguins, Puffins, Walrus and Polar Bear skulls. There are many other amazing specimens from around the world for you to be inspired by as well. After exploring the Zoology Museum and getting inspiration, you can have a go at making your own Christmas tree ornaments using pre-cut templates or creating something completely new.

Kingennie Christmas Market
Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd December, 12:00 – 16:00
Kick-start your first December weekend with an unforgettable day out with friends or family at the Kingennie Christmas Market. You'll find a range of stalls carefully curated and hand-picked for originality and quality. Take home perfect gifts including homeware, local foodie finds and stylish seasonal décor. Entry is free and no advance booking is required.
Christmas Wreath making (session for adults)
Monday 4th December, 13:00 – 15:00
Decorate your door with a Christmas wreath. Gather fresh foliage from the garden and make a beautiful wreath to take home. Sessions take place outside so dress for the weather! The garden is based in Dawson Park, with plenty of car parking, nearby bus stops and public toilets next door. These sessions are suitable for everyone aged 16 and over.
Verdant Works Christmas Fun Day
Saturday 9th December, 11:00 – 16:00
This magical Christmas Fun Day will include a mini market in the atmospheric Glazed Alley showcasing the best of Tayside and beyond; with local designers, crafters, illustrators, drinks and more! All you need for finding special gifts for your loved ones and getting in the Christmas spirit.
There will also be a performance from Dundee's Loadsaweeminsinging choir and hands-on festive activities for children, making for the perfect Christmas day out for the whole family!
*This free event does not include admission to Verdant Works museum. If you would like to visit the museum, you can buy tickets online up to seven days in advance.
Arbroath Christmas Farmer’s Market
Sunday 17th December, 10:00 – 14:00
Taking place in the Arbroath Academy Assembly Hall, there will be lots of local food and drink vendors as well as Christmas music and a visit from Santa. This is your chance to stock up on your favourite market treats in time for Christmas.
Meet and Greet Santa in City Square
Various dates and times from 30th November – 23rd December
Gather your loved ones, as groups are welcomed to share their wishes and laughter with Santa. Surrounded by the festive spirit, you will be welcomed into Dundee City Square’s festive tipi - an intimate, cosy space, where the star of the season, Santa Claus himself, eagerly awaits your arrival.
